Legal Dos and Don’ts

Because the Vote Global manifesto has been put together by a group of charities, some special laws apply.

Here are some simple do’s and don’ts:

Do

Campaign on the policies in the Vote Global manifesto

Invite candidates to public meetings or debates to discuss your issues (to ensure you appear impartial, you should invite a range of candidates but you can exclude those whose presence you think would be detrimental to the charity, or invite a limited number for practical reasons)

Approach individual candidates to discuss your issues

Publish information on parties’ policies and candidates views – on issues relevant to your organisation

Influence public opinion on these issues

Persuade parties to adopt your policy positions

Be open and transparent about any engagement with political parties

Don’t

Support or oppose any particular party or candidate

Become associated in the minds of the public with any particular party or candidate

Explicitly compare your views with those of parties or candidates in a way which makes it clear you are encouraging people to vote in a particular way

Tell people how to vote

Donate funds to any political party

Help any candidate with their campaign
